Mold Clean-up and Prevention

Mold Expertise

We have extensive training in implementing sound procedures for mold clean-up and prevention; however, we are not biologists, doctors, or hygienists; therefore, we can make no claim of expertise on Microbial Growth (mold) or its health effects.

The term ‘Toxic Mold’ is often used by laymen to define microbial growths that might contain or release mycotoxins or pathogenic fungi into their environment.   There are many mold species, and they cannot easily be identified by visual observation.  A mold infestation might contain many different species.  Only a trained hygienist should attempt to sample or identify molds.  It is much more effective to remove any mold found within a building than it is to attempt to determine the species specific degree of risk.  We treat all molds as though they might be toxic.

Training

Western Exterior Services, Inc. removes mold and mold affected materials.  We have specialized training and equipment for containment and clean-up of mold.  The majority of our work is performed under the direction of qualified industrial hygienists engaged independently to certify the procedures and outcome of the clean-up.

We implement site specific training at every project.  Each project has its unique challenges.  Site specific procedures are developed for implementing mold clean-up protocols, and reviewed with the hygienists prior to training the jobsite staff.

Controls

Controlling airflow within the work area is the primary method of preventing the spread of mold spores during clean-up.  Controlling airflow prevents the spread of airborne particulates during cleaning operations.

The most frequent method of controlling airflow is to create a negative air pressure in the clean-up area.  This is generally done by evacuating air through specialized Hepa filtered air control equipment.  This often requires the use of temporary partitions and impermeable coverings

Mold Cleanup and Prevention

Mold found inside building should be removed.  The affected materials should be removed and the spores should be prevented from spreading into the air and to new materials during the clean-up operation.

Removing mold without addressing the conditions that resulted in its growth will at best be temporary.   Mold cannot be abated.  Cleaning, removing impacted materials and fungicidal treatment of adjacent materials is unlikely to prevent recurrent growth, unless the conditions that promoted mold growth are addressed.

A mold infestation can be controlled by eliminating either the food or water on which the microbes feed.  Different species of mold utilize different food sources.  Those found in buildings are likely to feed on wood, cellulose, or dust.   It is generally accepted that the best method of preventing reoccurrence of mold and fungal growth is to control the water.  The leaks or condensation conditions must be eliminated
